Capital Campaigns:

capital campaign:  an intensive fund-raising effort to meet a specific financial goal within a specified period of time for one or more major projects that are out of the ordinary, such as the construction of a facility, the purchase of equipment, or the acquisition of endowment.
............. The NSFRE Fund-raising Dictionary

Fulfilling the Vision in a New or Renovated Facility is the biggest task a ministry will tackle.

Capital Campaigns come in two flavors:

  • Closed Donor Pool Campaign  -[ Limited number of donors - churches, schools, etc...]

  • Community Based Campaign  -[ Broad Community Reach - Rescue Mission, International Missions agency, etc . . . ]

Whichever type your ministry is, there are several things that must be in place, and a logical sequence of events that must be followed in order for you to meet your goal.

All Successful Capital Campaigns operate in Three Phases:

  • Planning and Preparation Phase

  • Quiet Leadership Gift Phase

  • Public Phase

Before you consider launching a capital campaign, please take some time and think through the following questions to see if your ministry is ready to proceed:

  1. Can we commit the time and support from key participants (board, staff, donors)?

  2. Is there a clear strategic plan for growth and improvement?

  3. Are Fundraising goals based in actual fundraising success (can you actually raise money)?

  4. Do you have a written Case for Support - Why should anyone invest in what God is doing through this ministry?

  5. Have you assessed the ministry's ability to raise the required money from the constituents you currently have?

  6. Do you have the ability to enlist key community or volunteer leadership to gain the proper level of attention to the project?

  7. Do existing major donors feel compelled to help meet the need?

  8. Do we have competent staff, and should we hire external professional counsel?

  9. Are there adequate operating funds to kick-start the campaign?

  10. Have you considered factors such as other campaigns underway in your area, whether the economy is helping our hurting your chances, and many other issues?
